Quotes stuff..
1. " This is my child, he said. i wash a dead mans brains out of his hair. That is my job. "
The quote shows the amount of death within the world the child has been left to live in " deathscape ", illustrating how death has become part of their everyday life... being not phased by it again shows their acceptance of death around them, shows the doom and haunting around them and places it within a gloomy apocalyptic atmosphere where in the act of smashing someones brains out is easy passed by, his calmness when saying this also reflects on how mundane of an activity this may have become to him. " Dead mans brains " is an example to the link from Romero's zombie classics ( in which he Referenced/nicked the cellar scene from ) " Child " reflects on the age of the boy, his innocence has been destroyed by the horror left in the world around them. " Job " He feels its his duty to clean the boy up, his purpose, however the fact he has called it a job may reflect on how he gets no pleasure out of it.. we dont exactly enjoy our jobs do we? This could also show how he gets payment out of it, maybe the payment in not living in the post apocalyptic world alone? "Child" distances himself from the boy as he does not want to get too close... he will have to kill him eventually and he wishes not to build a strong emotional bond with him, he also never calls him by his name which supports this.
2. Yes i am, he said. I am the one.
Shows the boys acceptance in himself and the world around him, admitting he is a part of something in that " i am ", reflects the isolation he feels himself and the world with " one " shows the small scale he is seeing the world in. illustrates how he is forced to mature early, forced to take responsibility in himself.
3 Tomatoes, peaches, beans, apricots. Tinned hams. Corned beef.
These words illustrate a vibrant selection of foods, colours and tastes... creating the image of a bounty and great selection of food and sustenance, however we realise that this in fact is a list of all the food they are carrying and that in fact it is not much at all, they start with a standard list but then begin to separate them with end stopping them, this reflects how food is beginning to become short and shows how there supply is progressively getting shorter... shows how they are slowly going to starve. The fact that the last piece of food is full stopped shows how there will be an end to the food and this will not go on forver, somewhere there will be an end, as apposed to an " ... " .
4. Are we still the good guys, he said.
The fact that there is no question mark ( lack of punctuation ) within this quote almost makes this a statement rather than a question, but we still read it as a question... it seems more of an accusation towards the father than a question to him, to provoke the fathers thoughts about himself as a person and his actions rather than to attempt a reply, The boys use of " good guys " also shows his age, in that he still doesn't have the mental grip on how people or humans in general act, he still separates people into individual groups of " good guys " or " bad guys " when in fact there is always ( in someones view ) going to be a certain group of bad guys to some other people, somewhere, they seem to be the bad guys to some other people. The fact that it has been dismissed as a question symbolises how there is no one to ask in the world, they are completely isolated.
5. We should go papa, he said. Yes, the man said. But he didn't.
The son address the father as " papa " which expresses how the pair are of a higher class the the normal person, this shows how they are further outlaws compared to most of the survivors who would probably be of a lower class, however the fact that they have adapted expresses how all humans are able to adapt to raw surroundings and are essentially built to survive whatever we are put against, shows the change around the world as well, they were probably well off and living in a stately home but are now walking the post apocalyptic world isolated but in the same position as each and other. The mans reluctance to move also shows how he is incapable of letting go of his old life, he will not accept the change and is willing to struggle and find the smallest amount of hope left in his now ruined world.
6. The snow fell and nor did it cease to fall.
this quote reflects on the over powering nature... of nature. the snow is falling and no matter what it will never fall, it reflects on how the world is changing, has changed into this apocalyptic world, and nothing we can do or could of done would help to stop this, it will never return nor never stop. the snow is also a metaphor for their lives now, it is cold, and bleak. it is forever the same, white and never ending. also reflecting on how they are never ending on their journey or simply the road they walk on.
Ben.
ReplyDeleteI love the depression you get from 'the one', something which could be seen as so special and privileged suddenly becomes a burden and a responsibility. It alters the power relationship, the man is suddenly just a caretaker for the child.
Similarly snow, which traditionally has connotations with winter and christmas has non of the positive and quaint associations in this story, everything seems to have been tarnished.
